BREAKING: Costa Rica court finds US expat Ann Patton not guilty in third murder trial

Ann Patton’s lawyer, Fabio Oconitrillo, told The Tico Times that Patton has no intention of leaving Costa Rica after her acquittal on murder charges Monday morning. Citing reasonable doubt, a three-judge panel absolved Patton of all charges in the death of her husband, John Bender in 2010, according to court spokeswoman Andrea Marín. Patton has always maintained that Bender, who died of a gunshot wound, committed suicide.

However, Oconitrillo acknowledged the possibility of yet another appeal from prosecutors:

“I hope that the Prosecutor’s Office is professional. After a third time of being told they’re wrong, they need to move on. But it’s also clear that this is a personal case for the prosecution and they’re going to exhaust all they resources they can.”

Despite her legal hurdles, Patton considers Costa Rica her home, he said, and she will stay here to resolve other pending legal matters.

“By now she has a lot of things to wrap up and see out here,” Oconitrillo said. “She’s going to stay here. She belongs here.”
